Incarna aimed to provide human avatars and related content, but succeeded only in fomenting unprecedented player backlash and set EVE's development firmly on the remote spaceship path.

I too feel CCP stepped hard on their-you-know-what with Incarna, but in only one major way… no content. How long would EVE have lasted if they had rolled it out with a hundred spaceships to choose from, hundreds of modules and fittings and, hell ship skins even… but you could not undock.

The problem was not that all or even a majority of the players don’t want avatar gameplay, but add to that ‘lack of content’ the NEX Store fiasco, Monoclegate and CCPs Fearless leak and you get the Summer of Rage… however, IF CCP had had some REAL content ready for the new Avatars, I can guarantee that (1) those of us who were interested in FPgameplay would have jumped on it, and (2) if the content was GOOD enough, it would have swayed some who were mebbe in the fence, and (3) it would have brought in a whole new segment to add to the plyerbase… then the whole NEX Store thing and all the rest would have been bad, but not anywhere near as bad as it was…

And the only reason everyone now feels “The Playerbase” of EVE does not want “Barbies In Space” is because without content for the new Avatars, even those of us who wanted it were pissed off and so did not argue the point… and those who really didn’t want it were exceptionally vitriolic and vocal about it and what’s worse, they felt justified in being so.

The ONLY real mistake CCP made was giving us a new way to play EVE and no way to PLAY it… I do believe it would still work even today, but now they would have to roll it out quietly… they screwed the pooch on making it a Big Deal and you don’t get 2 swings at that. But I do believe they should create the content… then simply Green Light that door… and let us find it on our own…Turamarth Elrandirhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08129383421613323047noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2174961188649730147.post-12954166025678961592014-10-21T18:45:48.890+01:002014-10-21T18:45:48.890+01:00While CCP has certainly been focused on consolidat...While CCP has certainly been focused on consolidating EVE's niche appeal post-Incarna, the wider EVE Universe might yet have some cards to play with the forthcoming Valkyrie and Legion. It will be a different approach to the same desire to deliver a sci-fi universe that the likes of Elite: Dangerous and Star Citizen are also gunning for.

I think we're entering a golden age of sci-fi gaming.Mat Westhorpehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08553980835026556794noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2174961188649730147.post-91724726862250587152014-10-21T18:42:30.571+01:002014-10-21T18:42:30.571+01:00Thanks. I do think there is a cross-over and much of the appeal of both games speaks to a similar demographic, but they present similar sci-fi tropes in very different ways in terms of gameplay.Mat Westhorpehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08553980835026556794noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2174961188649730147.post-69217839345072656782014-10-21T18:40:43.676+01:002014-10-21T18:40:43.676+01:00Isn't that what a docking computer is for? Funnily enough, I've always wished there was a bit more to EVE's docking, even if it was just watching your ship get towed in from your balcony (I mean, it's not like it makes much sense at the moment anyway, but let's not go there).Mat Westhorpehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08553980835026556794noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2174961188649730147.post-13010835005153359382014-10-21T17:13:32.651+01:002014-10-21T17:13:32.651+01:00EVE is the best cult game around. But the failure to implement Incarna opened the race to be the best Space MMO by leaving EVE behind.

Elite: Dangerous is too humble to be that best-of-kind game. Star Citizen is spreading too thin to be that best-of-kind game, too. But EVE is not even in the race.

Is EVE a good game? Yes it is. But it's only a shadow of what it could have been, and is shrinking to fit back into its naturally small cult niche. EVE's call to greatness sounded and was missed in 2011.Angry Onionshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02750018939886265706noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2174961188649730147.post-15788393477440255792014-10-21T14:21:43.144+01:002014-10-21T14:21:43.144+01:00This is pretty much what I gathered ED would be li...This is pretty much what I gathered ED would be like. I too remember the 1984 version and wondered it this incarnation and Eve would be mutually exclusive to each other. Sounds like between both games, you can fill niches in the opposing game until your heart's content.
